This is a classic old film about a man who gets accidentally entangled in a network of spies without knowing what is going on until it is almost too late. His initial naivete gradually turns to a determination to outwit the bad guys, as he survives one narrow escape after another. It is a typical Hitchcock treatment of an innocent man on the run. The Robert Donat version differs in several ways from the book by John Buchan, which is a good read if you like old adventure/mysteries. If you enjoy black-and-white films at all, this one will be more appealing than the remakes. Extreme feminists may object to the hero's treatment of the heroine, even though she is no ninny, but a force to be reckoned with every bit as troublesome to him as the spies. |
