Music has long been considered a universal language with the power to bring people together, but can the simple act of playing music possibly unite a child with a mother and father who live in two different cities and don'... more »t even know of the child's existence? Having shared one extraordinary night, classical cellist Lyla Novacek (Keri Russell) and Irish singer and songwriter Louis Connelly (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) were a union meant to be that was torn apart by circumstances and a protective father (William Sadler). After eleven years, both Lyla and Louis have given up performing only to find that they are unhappy and searching for a sense of fulfillment that will ultimately lead both artists back to music and performing. Evan (Freddie Highmore) is an 11-year old orphan who's grown up hearing music in everything around him and is convinced that his real parents want him and will find him with the help of music. Driven by his innate musical genius and a powerful compulsion to perform before the world, Evan runs away from the orphanage and is initially taken in by a street man known as Wizard (Robin Williams) who encourages his musical talent and renames him August Rush and, later, by a local priest who arranges for August to receive a Julliard education. August is a child prodigy who excels beyond even the wildest expectations and earns the opportunity of a lifetime--a chance to perform in front of an enormous audience in New York's Central Park. The question is; can his performance possibly reach the audience August really craves? While elements of this film are completely unbelievable (take August's instant prowess on the guitar or his immediate and sophisticated grasp of musical notation and musical theory), the message of the universality of music and the notion that "the music is all around us, all you have to do is listen" is both compelling and powerful. --Tami Horiuchi« less

A very touching, heartfelt love story with some A-lister stars. Freddie Highmore (before he was the Good Doctor) really shines as the orphaned musical little boy that wants nothing more than to play music and find his parents. Excellent movie for the entire family.

A beautiful story, expertly executed. The music was especially thrilling.

If you love music you will love this film. Robin Williams was excellent as a "pied piper" of lost children" and master panhandler. The romantic story of August's parents meeting, and then losing and re-finding one another was satisfying and sweet. The music in this film was breathtaking and if you never noticed it before, music IS in everything and is everywhere.

This movie is a new "twist" on Oliver Twist. Instead of stealing for the man who feeds them, they perform, musically, for tips. Since this is not an old movie, it can not be called a "classic" but it is of the caliber of the classics. I got it to add to my permanent collection because it was that good. The music is wonderful, the story line endearing. A must have for any personal dvd collection.

Definitely a keeper...one we watch again and again!
I like the wealth of child empowered movies out in recent years...the "believe in yourself" and "follow your dreams messages" are terrific!
And the music is so awesome we're on the wl for the soundtrack! In the meantime, we can slip in the movie and scene select the music...which my son did for a couple hours tonight, until I sent him to bed.
And the deleted scenes were all great; I wish it had the feature to watch all of them in the movie...they were all valuable bits!
Tha casting was great...can't get enough of this kid...his best movie so far! And the Wizard character was fantastically complex (Robin Williams)...loves music, cares about the kids, but grew up on the street and has a pile of baggage; anger issues, control issues, abuse issues, legal issues; drops all his ethics and forgets the joy of music in the pursuit of $$$$ but ultimately does the right thing (in the deleted scenes).

Good story. I wasn't highly impressed, but I didn't want to walk away either. It would have been much better had they casted actors who could actually play the instruments well. I think it's really beautiful to watch someone masterfully play an instrument on screen. This was all bits and pieces (shot of the hands, then shot of the face) so I think it lost a lot of power.

I've been seeing mixed reviews and to be honest, I'd never heard of it when I saw it. That being said, this movie is brilliant! I couldn't take my eyes off of it...and when it came to it's conclusion, I was totally choked up. So very unexpected was this movie...excelent actors, beautiful music, compelling storytelling....4 stars and a standing ovation. I don't know how I missed this movie the first time.

I love this movie. Fredie Highmore does a fantastic job. Such a cute kid! But best off all is the absolutely beautiful music. It's breathtaking!

Normally this would be the type of movie I would love. But I was not a big fan of it. The music was very well composed but other than that everything else about the movie was bad. It was overly sappy and the plotline of coincidences was so far fetched that I could not suspend my belief in reality long enough to get into the movie.

I love this movie. It's very emotional -- you will need tissues handy! This is one of those movies that makes you believe again. And it plays in widescreen on one side, full screen on the other.
