"I remember watching this when I was younger because my Dad loves Barbra and I'd watch this on VHS everynow and then. It's a great concert set at her home and it's on a nice, clear night with a slight breeze and great guests and she sounded fantastic.
To me, the best songs are Somewhere, Papa Can You Hear Me and People. She has a magnificent voice and even outdoors she pulls off every note. The big surprise of the night was an unannounced appearance of Barry Gibb who sang Guilty with her and my all time favourite song of theirs What Kind Of Fool. The crowd really lit up again when he came out.
This dated performance is probably best just for fans mainly. She is outstanding and this concert was really enjoyable. I love it and I'm so glad it's now out on DVD."
September 6, 1986 - a very special evening

"After battling severe stage fright for the majority of the seventies and eighties, Barbra Streisand finally returned to the concert stage on September 6, 1986 for the "one night only" ONE VOICE concert. The show was heavily publicized in the media, tickets were sold at the astronomically high price of $5000 per couple, and columnists and critics everywhere were anxiously waiting to see if Streisand could overcome her immense performance-phobia and still deliver the goods. Fortunately, all of the hype was more than justified. When Streisand finally took the stage that night and opened the show with a tour de force performance of "Somewhere," every member of the audience was left in awe of the stunning power of this woman's ageless voice.
Though Streisand was visibly and audibly nervous during her first few numbers, nothing could keep her undiminished vocal prowess from shining brightly through. If anything, her occasional jitteriness only made her seem more human. She was supported not by the typical orchestra, but by a small handful of musicians on electronic instruments. This actually provides the majority of the show with a warmer and more intimate feel. With the small band and the limited orchestration, it is Streisand's golden voice that is left at the forefront of the concert - and I wouldn't have it any other way. In addition to a slate of her own signature numbers, Streisand also performs some new material, such as the lovely "A New World" (from the 1954 version of A Star Is Born) and the traditional "America the Beautiful," which was the perfect close to the moving evening.
A few more of the evening's many highlights include Barbra's haunting rendition "Send In The Clowns," a relaxed duet with guest Barry Gibb on "What Kind Of Fool," and a surprisingly lively performance of "The Way We Were," with a newer, more contemporary arrangement. Most impressive of all Barbra's impassioned rendition of "Papa, Can You Hear Me?" that night is one of her most moving performances ever. Barbra also slips into a rare cover of "Over The Rainbow," and does the song more justice than anyone since Judy Garland (whom Barbra dedicates the performance to). Instead of screaming the song out at the top of her lungs like Patti Labelle and Sam Harris, Barbra gives "Over The Rainbow" a beautifully understated performance and makes the number her own.
The profits from ONE VOICE benefited the Democratic Party, who were at the time trying to make sure a disaster like Chernobyl never happened again. Barbra's often-criticized stage dialogue on the issue may be a little heavy-handed at times, but you can tell she strongly believes every word of it. In particular, her speech proceeding "People," though unoriginal, is very moving nonetheless. It is also a bit disappointing that the special's runtime is less than an hour, although the parody number "Send Home the Clowns" and Robin Williams' opening monologue seem to be the only major omissions from the evening's set list (and I can certainly live without both).
Other than the short runtime and the sometimes overbearing spoken statements, ONE VOICE is a great presentation of a special concert that will delight fans and even many cynics. In the end, ONE VOICE was a massive success. The concert was filmed and received record-breaking ratings when televised on HBO, while the audio recording of the show peaked at #9 on the Hot 200 and was quickly certified Platinum. Most importantly, ONE VOICE raised over $1.5 million which led Barbra to establish the "Streisand Foundation," which supports numerous charitable organizations."
GREAT PERFORMANCE, LACKLUSTER DISC!!!!

"First of all let me state that I am a big fan of this performance. I had ONE VOICE on Laserdisc and I have it on CD. Barbara Streisand puts on a phenomenal show. But the DVD presentation of ONE VOICE is really terrible. There are only 2 audio soundtracks, Dolby Digital 2.0 and Dolby Digital 5.1. Both of these soundtracks have very poor sound quality, they suffer from severe compression of the data stream. The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is really bad, the whole concert seems to come from the center speaker. Although the Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack is severly compressed and sounds like an MP3, this is the best of the 2 soundtracks that are included on this DVD. The whole concert is only about 90 minutes long, so there is plenty of room on this disc for an uncompressed PCM 2.0 soundtrack as well as a high resolution DTS 24/96 soundtrack. Why Sony even released this disc with the terrible sound that it contains is a mystery. This performance deserves a much nicer audio presentation than this DVD contains. I watched this disc twice and I will never watch this DVD again, the sound is just terrible. I will stick with the Laserdisc."
Barbra, Live at Her Best

"For me, of all the live shows that Barbra has done since this special evening, Once Voice stands out as the best. I say this in part because her 1996 Tour, her "farewell" shows of a few years ago, and her 2006 Tour all have focused on Barbra's more traditional Broadway songs and styling.
One Voice blends the best of both worlds, and here we are treated to live readings of some of Bab's Pop hits as well. Evergreen, The Way We Were, People, all focus on Barbra the Pop Diva. Further 2 songs are featured from her top selling album, Guilty, with Berry Gibb joining her on stage as well. Guilty and What Kind of Fool
translate from multi platinum album to a live setting without misssing a beat. She is even backed by a tight group of musicians, as oppposed to a full orchestra.
That said, her "Broadway" songs are allowed to shine even brighter, from the opener of Somewhere, to
Send In The Clowns, Somethings Coming, she delivers these gems in a powerfull yet relaxed manner.
Over The Rainbow is also featured here, and she pays tribute to one of her idols Judy Garland.
Encoring with a beautifully simple rendition of America The Beautifull, Barbra took the celebrity filled audience on a journey through her stellar career."
Streisand in good voice in 1980s concert

"Barbra seems relaxed and in very good voice here(especially since she hadn't sung in public for many years.) It's nice to see the inclusion of the Gibb/Streisand duets here too- truly 2 highpoints in her pop career. And Barbra's version of Send in the Clowns is perhaps the showstopper. It's great to have yet another of her concert appearances on DVD since she is is the greatest female voice of her generation (perhaps a couple of generations)."
