When The Light Shines Out Of The Darkness
Katherine Graham | 05/10/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Sometimes, when we receive something not expected - it can be a kind of blessing in disguise. This DVD delivers precisely that. The darkness for me was the predictable emphasis upon the greatness of Charlotte Bronte, and her trailblazing literary 'accomplishments' at the expense of Emily Jane - the real light. Still, it was very helpful to know that literary expert-icons featured in the DVD have 'bought into' the Charlotte Bronte myth. But other experts know that the Charlotte Bronte legend, so to speak, was very much created by Charlotte Bronte herself and a conspiracy of close friends; what we might call today the PR launch Charlotte first created for herself and her legacy. At this price, the DVD is a bargain, and if you can purchase "The Brontes of Haworth" on DVD along with the books - "The Heretic" by Stevie Davies as well as "All Alone: The Life and Private History of Emily Jane Bronte" by Romer Wilson - the latter comprise a start to de-mythicizing (if that is a word...) Charlotte in order to bring the truly brightest light of Emily Jane's genius out of the darkness at last."
