Movie Reviews

Something in the air tonight
05/01/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"More than a decade ago I found a VHS copy of "Sonny Chiba - Bodyguard" at my local video store. My fascination with this crude japanese fighter is still a bit of a mystery for me....some 14 years later. "The Bodyguard"'s plot is a bit hard to follow, the fights lack Bruce Lee's agility but still there is magic in the air. There is something about Sonny Chiba that sets him apart from all others: He has a style of his own and hence his charm. I've been waiting for this particular movie to be released on DVD for quite some time and therefore I was very happy to find it out one bright day at a special price (not to mention the double feature). This is a widescreen presentation...of some sort. The sound quality is considerably good (I know the original copy doesn't have a magnificent soundtrack) and the picture quality is the best I've seen (again, considering how old this movie is and what kind of cameras were used to shoot it). I think this DVD is a good way to get to know Sonny Chiba and for those of us who already know the guy and his work (the "streetfighter" series in particular) - here's a rare classic that is well worth your time and money."
