There is, according to Burlesque, a nightclub on the Sunset Strip that looks like a blend of Cabaret and Moulin Rouge and employs a full contingent of dancers and musicians in the service of a neo-retro-burlesque-blues pro... more »gram. Presiding over the craziness within is Tess, a grande dame who also performs occasionally and who could only, under these circumstances, be played by Cher. Entering the scene is a young leather-lunged hopeful from Iowa named Ali, played by Christina Aguilera in her movie-acting debut. The vibe of this glitzy concoction is more Flashdance than Showgirls, despite prerelease predictions that the film would be a campfest of epic proportions. In fact, it's more cornball than trashy. Ali hits most of the clichés of the genre: defying Tess's skepticism by proving her mettle during an impromptu stage number; flirting with the nice-guy bartender (Cam Gigandet, of Twilight) whose home she shares for a while, in a purely platonic way, of course, just until she gets her feet on the ground; and keeping a wary eye on the high roller (Eric Dane, of Grey's Anatomy) who wants to possess her, because, you see, he takes whatever he likes. And did we mention that Tess is facing foreclosure on the club in a month's time? Seriously, you didn't see that coming? Writer-director Steve Antin has no embarrassment about putting any of this across, which may be why it all feels weirdly innocent, if relentlessly silly. Stanley Tucci revives his gay assistant from The Devil Wears Prada, Alan Cumming lurks about in an undefined role that might well have been filmed months after everybody else, and Kristen Bell enjoys a few wicked-witch moments as Ali's main rival. Aguilera, needless to say, belts out her songs as only someone with a very large voice can, and Cher stops the show with an old-fashioned torch song ("You Haven't Seen the Last of Me") that is clearly designed as a roof-raiser. (And, by gum, it works.) This is a ridiculous movie, but it gets points for never claiming to be anything else. --Robert Horton« less

While I did enjoy this movie (great music, dancing, and costumes), and Christina Aguilera did a wonderful acting job, I didn't think it was very believable. Are there really any Burlesque establishments still around?
Like the other "rater" suggested, this movie is like Coyote Ugly and also Paradise (with Julianne Hough). So if you like that theme, this is a great movie.

"Burlesque" is an enjoyable film. I really thought Christina Aguilera gave a good, solid debut performance. Much better than I ever expected from a singer that tries to act (sorry Madonna). and Cher gives a solid performance for her part (Cher's one of the few that can sing AND act.)
And while this is no great film its no "Glitter" either. (sorry Mariah)
ATTENTION: Spoilers!!! if you have not seen Burlesque (or Coyote Ugly) and you plan on seeing either one, you should stop reading NOW.
If you have seen Burlesque & Coyote Ugly you probably know what I am talking about already.
If not this review is pointing out the fact that Burlesque is a complete rip-off of Coyote Ugly. Some things have been changed in Burlesque, a few characters added and a few omitted. some details have been slightly altered and I think the film makers were just hoping that it had been long enough in between the two films for anyone to notice, but here they are...
1. Both Coyote Ugly and Burlesque start off with a young girl who leaves a small town to go to the big city to make it in the music business.
2. Both hit the pavement to look for work in a music montage. both women get shot down numerous times before finding a job.
3. both end up working in a bar or club serving, instead of singing.
4. eventually both start dancing for a bunch of drunk patrons. (instead of serving them.)
4. Both the bar in Coyote Ugly and the Club in Burlesque are run by women who seem like total b**ches at first but eventually turn out to have a heart of gold.
5. Both films feature a co-worker that gives the main character a very hard time.
6. In both films the main character has a secret stash of money that they hide. and in both films someone breaks in and steals their emergency funds.
7. both have a romance with a guy that may or may not work out, which of course eventually does.
8. and finally both realize their dreams of making it in the music business. Sure one is singing and one is song-writing but they had to change a few of the details.
It's the same movie, just saying. Sure some things were changed here and there, but not many.

I really liked this movie. As I am older I had never heard Christina Aguilera sing. My jaw dropped open when I heard her beautiful voice. I am a fan now. I have always been a fan of Cher's as I basically grew up with her on television. I liked all the characters in this movie also. Let the critics nay say it, but to each his own I say. I vote a yes with 4 stars for this movie.

Christina Aguilera played a believable charcter; her acting was really pretty good. I thought that story line was good as well. Her singing, it was amazing as always; from the first note to the very end! She has such a powerful, sexy voice I always get goose bumps when I hear it. Cher sang two songs in this movie. What can you say about Cher? Amazing. I saw this movie twice in the theater and now I own a copy on DVD. Love it!!

The movie started out fine. You can't go wrong with Cher singing...but went downhill from there. Stiff acting, lame storyline, even the music fell flat. Zzzzzz. Glad I rented it instead of wasting a credit.
