When golden-ager Mabel Lederer buries her deceased husband, Hughie, she discovers that though her spouse might be dead, he certainly isn't gone. In fact, his demise has somehow resurrected Mabel's long-suppressed clairaudient abilities allowing Hughie to harangue her from beyond the grave while she systematically de-Hughies their home, selling and/or burning every vestige of his earthly possessions, including his prized paintings. In search of a fresh start, and to escape Hughie's constant criticism, Mabel buys a one-way ticket on the next available train, riding it to the "end of the line". What follows is Mabel's metamorphosis into the person she's always wanted to be as she sheds her old life and old name in favor of a new name--Angela Motorman-- and a new profession -- mediumship -- or as Mabel/Angela likes to put it, "dabbling in the supernatural". Based on an unfinished Shirley Jackson novel, this story of one woman's late-stage journey to self-actualization stars Estelle Parsons and is directed by Joanne Woodward.
