Drew Hancock's "Companion" is a film that spans many genres and many lofty ideas, but desperately needs a rewrite with beefier characters.
Josh (legacy artist Jack Quaid) and Iris (Sophie Thatcher) are a loving couple who are spending the weekend at a remote "cabin" with their friends Eli (Harvey Guillen), Patrick (Lukas Gage), Kat (Megan Suri), and their mysterious host, Sergey (Rupert Friend). How these friends know each other is not very well-established, so you just have to kind of accept that they're buds and go with it.
Oh, and it just so happens that Iris is a robot. Think Pris from Blade Runner - "...your basic pleasure model." Unlike the Replicants of Blade Runner, however, Iris does not know she's a robot.
I won't say much more about the plot except to say it is chock-full of twists and turns which are pretty well-hidden until they're revealed. And like I said, it spans multiple genres: sci-fi, rom-com, horror, heist, and revenge. If you're looking for murder, human trafficking, domestic abuse, assault and battery, gunplay, knifeplay, automated corkscrew-play, "Companion" has you covered. The casserole of genres is pretty entertaining, once you get used to the idea that the film's not going to stick to just one.
The biggest problem with the film is the underwritten characters. We learn more about each character's motivation as the film progresses, but not their history or relationship to the others. It's the equivalent of putting a male and female protagonist together in Act 1 and then by Act 3 they're in love...without giving them any reason to be except for the sake of the "happy ending." If I don't really know who any of these characters are, why should I care about their actions or their fates?

They really nailed the AI angle in this one. Would have been a perfect movie minus a few things.
