Much better than remembered. Definitely worth a watch if you like the action drama disaster type movies. The special effects were real good as was the acting.

My wife and I both love this movie. It "has it all". Disaster flicks are either really fun or complete flops...not much in the middle. Dante's Peak is right up there with 2012 and Poseidon. We've watched it three times, and it's never gotten old. Definitely one of Linda Hamilton's better roles. Liked her in this and in the original Terminator movie and not much else, unfortunately. Pierce Brosnan is likeable and believable.
A vulcanologist arrives at a countryside named Dante's Peak after a long dormant volcano, which has recently been named the second most desirable place to live in America, and discovers that Dante's Peak may wake up at any moment. The city council types fight him tooth and nail on the idea of evacuations, but as the hints of something major keep happening, he and the local mayor, (Linda Hamilton's character) team up to save the day. Somewhere in there, they find time to fall for each other.
It's hard to find a solid action movie that isn't rated R, due to over the top violence, foul language, drug use, and so on. Dante's Peak is one you can sit the whole family down for. (Unless the little ones are scared by scenes of imminent danger.) Good on the director and studio for keeping it clean. Suspense, action, romance and a terrific cast make this disaster movie a winner.
Five stars!

As a disaster movie fan, this is one of my all time favorites. This film has been way under rated. Pierce Brosnan is really great in this movie! It's actually one of my favorite Pierce Brosnan films! Linda Hamilton is also very good and Grant Heslov's character is both funny and very moving. The story is excellent and the situation was researched extensivly by Roger Donaldson who did an excellent job of bringing all the action to life in a very believable way. It's much better than most "volcano" films I have ever seen. I guess I have watched this film at least 15 times or more and it always sends chills down my spine.

If you like action movies, then this movie is worth watching.
Although it is not completely believable at times (driving across a bed of hot lava, and miraculously the gas tank never explodes... having an entire lake turn to acid... out-driving a pyroclastic cloud, etc.) you can easily over-look the scientific innacuracies because the plot itself is good.
Not recommend for younger kids. It is definitely scary and at times graphic. Over-all worth the credit to watch it several times.
