Movie Reviews

Plenty of twists and turns in Dead Gorgeous
Russell Fanelli | Longmeadow, MA USA | 06/20/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"We would not be a bit surprised if Dead Gorgeous had been directed by Alfred Hitchcock, which is a great tribute to director Sarah Harding. Twists and turns abound in this story of a murderous femme fatale, Antonia, played to the hilt by Helen McCrory, and her not so willing accomplice, Rose, skillfully acted by Fay Ripley.

Rose and her long lost friend Antonia are both in a pickle. Each has a husband she would prefer dead. Antonia has a plan to get rid of both of them and immediately disposes of Rose's husband in what appears to be an accident at the train station. Getting rid of Antonia's husband proves to be more difficult, yet the murderous Antonia has the skills and disposition worthy of Lady Macbeth. Her friend Rose is in over her head and does not know what to do about it. She appears to be no match for Antonia's determination and manipulative behavior. The action builds to a surprising and satisfying conclusion.

Dead Gorgeous is so much better than 80% of the movies turned out by Hollywood, yet it is unlikely that many people outside of Great Britain will have heard of it. I hope that this review will be seen by a few people who will then be persuaded to watch the film, which will delight and entertain them. Highly recommended.

Knocked me dead

"Mostly you watch tripe, mildly entertaining drivel produced by the studios and even HBO and PBS or BBC, from whom we hope for more. This is it! This is a great story, told with style and verve. Buy it, you will not regret it."
Immensely Entertaining!

"This movie had me until the very end. Excellent acting, humorous, and a surprise ending to boot."
Excellent

"Just great. I really liked how they stuck with the time period, rather than trying to modernize or overly idealize. Love the sense of humor. It was a nice change from soppy romantic love stories one usually sees. An good story, and not done to death and overblow. Just about perfect in fact. Love the ending."
