Great film; poor DVD

"Unfortunately, the quality of print from which this DVD was made is atrocious. Scratches (including a persistent one running through the center of the picture during most of the film) are distracting enough. Worse are the gaps created by scotch tape splices, resulting in missing dialogue and irritating jumps. It is a shame that there isn't a good print of the film, which itself is a tour de force with extraordinary perfromances."
Some things MUST be overlooked

"I have purchased lp's and cd's that have sound problems because of the time they were recorded, . Yet the strength and beauty of these performances transcend most of the limitations of archaic recording techniques (The recordings of early Jascha Heifetz and live recordings of Charlie Parker come to mind).
I purchased this as a gift and the recipeint insisted I watch this version with her. I'm glad I did. While it is true that the quality is far from pristine (especially in this "digitally remastered" age), the greatness of this film comes through very clearly.
So, I highly recommend this version. Look beyond the (so-called) poor film quality and watch these incredible performances, especially from Frederich March."
