I watched it most of the way through only because I did not want to get off my exercise machine. Sylvester Stallone heads up an all-star cast of old school action heroes (including Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Jason Statham and Stone Cold Steve Austin) in this vintage '80s style blow'em up/shoot'em up about a team of mercenaries who are hired to liquidate a South American dictator, but then find out there's actually a sleazy American connection (Eric Roberts) running things from behind the scenes. Movie ReviewsMindless entertainment . . . Joel S. Schneider | San Francisco | 10/07/2010 (3 out of 5 stars) "Sure this film is mindless entertainment, but sometimes that hits the spot. I found myself having a good time even though much of the dialogue and acting was awful. I did enjoy the fight scenes, which seemed bone-crunchingly real at times. For me, though, what stuck and resonated was Mickey Rourke's performance as Tool. This character ended up being kind of the yoda, the spiritual center, of the Expendables (if you can picture a yoda that looks like a super-griseled biker). At one point Rourke delivered a soulful monologue that was so powerful and filled with emotion that it was almost like he was doing ALL of the acting for the entire cast - (I really won't get that monologue out of my head for quite a while, and I really don't want to). Of course, I wish there was more of the Tool character, but he did give the film an emotional boost that was needed and I felt that after his monologue things really seemed to take off. Stallone did a good job of utilizing Rourke's talent to provide some motivation to the mayhem - not that you actually need any in this kind of movie. Eventually "The Expendables" achieves a crescendo of violence that goes on and on like a prolonged orgasm in an action lover's wet dream. This movie will be lots of fun for some but it will also be hated by many . . . so be it."
