Entertainingly awful film made to cash in on the manufactured Lambada dance craze that lasted for somewhere around three days in 1990, The Forbidden Dance stars Laura Herring as a Brazilian jungle princess (no, really) sent to America to stop the Petramco corporation from deforesting her home. Along the way, she dances the Lambada. A lot. Sig Haig, Richard Lynch, and Kid Creole and the Coconuts are along for the ride. Guilty pleasures just don’t get much more guilty than this.

"The Forbidden Dance is a fun movie; badly acted, horribly directed and cheesy, yet strangely engrossing and loveable. It tries to be serious, but fails for the most part because everything about it is so dated. Yet, it is energetic and lively, with upbeat songs and very HOT dancing. You'll ultimately find yourself addicted, without knowing why. Fans of Laura Harring (Mulholland Dr.) should definitely seek this out to see her in an early role. It is much better than the similar Lambada, released in theaters on the same DAY in 1990!!! As fun trivia, Lambada producers sued successfully to have the word "lambada" removed from "The Forbidden Dance"'s official title, though only "The Forbidden Dance" uses the song "Lambada" which launched the short-lived dance craze. The title is now used for the DVD release."

"I love this movie. I seen it when it first came out in 90 and fell in love with it. So I bought it. The music itself will make you get outta your seat and start dancing right then and there.

But the Lambada dance itself is enticing and will have you craving for a dancing partner at the very moment.

I give it 4 stars, also it sends out the cheezy cliche message about "if you want something bad enough, go and get it"

"I LOVE this movie. The songs are so sultry. The dancing is so full of passion. When you watch this it puts you in THE MOOD-for real. If you want to jumpstart your relationship, watch this movie!! The music makes you want to dance which in my case led to more.. Does anyone know how to get this soundtrack???"

Singing in the Rainforest

"Care for the environment, the ozone hole, illegal immigration, safe sex, drunk driving, a villain from Texas with a drawl..."The Forbidden Dance" is a cheesy movie that's surprisingly relevant. Of course,in the spirit of "Xanadu","The Forbidden Dance" is one of those "so bad it's great" movies,and makes one wonder why it hasn't been adapted for Broadway. Yet. I was laughing within the movie's first five minutes,though it takes itself seriously.

In the opening scene,Amazonian Indians are dancing capoeira (Brazilian martial arts),speaking Spanish,and there's the surprisingly Caucasian princess,Nisa (Laura Harring) with her Ellen Burstyn-like mother. The villain,cowboy hat-wearing Texan Benjamin Maxwell of Petramco,intrudes on the Natives' erotic dancing,telling them he'll take their land. In slow motion,Nisa mourns over a tree after Benjamin drives over it. As in her later movie "Mulholland Drive",Laura Harring has a trippy experience in LA. Nisa meets Jason (Jeff James).They dance the Lambada erotically,yet there's never any chemistry between them. Jason and Nisa face many obstacles to their love. Nisa is unjustly fired from her job as a maid,and ends up dancing the Lambada at the sex club Xtasy,run by the menacing lesbian madam Mickey. Jason has to deal with his evil ex-girlfriend Ashley. Finally, Nisa explains to Jason the plight of the rainforests. Jeff James' acting as Nisa's lover is quite stiff,considering his only previous "acting" experience was in "adult" films. Jason&Nisa overcome obstacles to perform the Lambada on Kid Creole's TV show&tell everyone about the rainforest.

"Forbidden Dance" is laughably ham-handed with its message. The closing credit says "This movie is dedicated to the protection of the rainforest." When Jason&Nisa are about to consummate their relationship,their Hispanic friend slips a condom under the bedroom door. When Jason&Nisa are invited to drink in celebration,Jason refuses because he's driving. The script is amazingly bad...yet the Lambada song is great.

On its recent compilation,"World Hits",Putumayo World Music has Kaoma's "Lambada",a song which is a frequent motif in this movie. Unfortunately,Putumayo fails to mention in its liner notes that Kaoma's "Lambada" inspired not one,but TWO cheesy movies that opened on the same day in 1990. Yes,bad movies can happen to good songs,but they're so bad they're great! Thankfully,there was never "Macarena:The Feature Film.""
