I had no idea that this movie (Winner of Three Academy Awards - Best Supporting Actor, Cinematography and Sound) was such a jewel and telld an incredible based on our America history with Matthew Broderick, Cary Elwes, Morgan Freeman and others leading the way. A must watch! Peter C. from ROSEVILLE, MN Reviewed on 7/28/2012... Of the many Civil War films which have come out lately, this is the best. I have it and never tire of watching it. It is superbly acted and filmed and, from what I've read, is quite factual. There was quite a controversy in the government about allowing black soldiers to be allowed to fight: they would run away or throw down their weapons and simply quit. Abraham Lincoln realized before many other top officials that they could and should be allowed to serve their country and he authorized black troops after much discussion and soul=searching. That transformed the war from a war to unite the country to a war for freedom of African-American soldiers. They proved to be brave, well-disciplined soldiers. At the end, the battle at Fort Wagner, South Carolina, many of them died valiantly after volunteering to storm the breastworks. They were led by a white colonel, Robert Gould Shaw, something unheard of up until that time. Shaw was killed and simply thrown into the mass grave with his soldiers. One soldier who survived received the Medal of Honor, although he had to wait 85 years to get it. This isn't just a Civil War movie, it's a movie which questions our decisions and brings our prejudices to the forefront. These men of the heroic 54th Massachusetts Regiment were heroes and they found glory in their heroism and what they gave to our country and freedom. If you haven't seen this, do so.
