Before hitting it big with "Whiplash," Damien Chazelle (whose praises I have sung in a previous review) wrote one of the dumbest movies I've ever had the pleasure of watching, "Grand Piano" from 2013, directed by Eugenio Mira.
There's a movie from 2002 called "Phone Booth" in which Colin Farrell plays a man who's trapped in a phone booth by a sniper who gives him commands via the phone in the phone booth. Well, take that premise and apply it to a concert pianist (Elijah Wood) who's threatened by a sniper (John Cusack) throughout a public performance, and you've got "Grand Piano."
Tom Selznick (Wood) is returning to the stage five years after having an in-concert nervous breakdown. His wife, famous actress Emma Selznick (Kerry Bishe) is in the audience. His good friend Norman Reisinger (Don McManus) is the conductor of the orchestra. Our sniper manages to get Selznick to put a wireless headset in one ear so they can communicate, and to remind him of all the juicy targets available should he fail to play what he's supposed to when he's supposed to.
The story is ludicrous and I won't spoil it. Suffice it to say Chazelle of all people should know that voices carry in a concert hall, and there's no way Selznick and the sniper would be able to have a mid-concert conversation without the entire audience hearing at least Selznick's half of it.
This movie didn't make me angry - I was laughing way too much at the unintentional comedy to hate it. But come on...between Frodo Baggins, Rob Gordon, and Damien Chazelle, *someone* had to know this was a goofy-ass movie.
(But it has an actual McGuffin!)

Stage fright can be terrifying. This movie has you on the edge of your piano bench.
