Child of the "40's | Cedar Falls, Iowa | 11/15/2009 (3 out of 5 stars) "I saw Gung Ho, the movie about the raid on Makin Island when I was small child; I do not remember whether it was in the early '40's or when it was reissued in the '50's. My reaction at that time was very positive and I was ready to join the Marines and fight the dreaded enemy. I saw it again in the '80's or '90's on TV. My reaction at the more recent viewing was that it was pretty hokey and cornball. It is a movie that was made in a very brief amount of time and for a very specific reason. It was propaganda, pure and simple, and designed to get the American public to support the war effort and contribute to U. S. Bond drives. It was also intended to demonstrate that the U. S. was prepared to take the war to the enemy. It really was not very different from other movies made during the early '40's, i.e., "Back to Bataan", and "60 Seconds Over Tokyo", to name only a couple. "Gung Ho", is an interesting story and is worth viewing as a depiction of an actual historic event. The acting is OK, given the script the actors had to work with. It is also interesting to watch actors who were later to make a mark in the world of cinema later.Gung Ho" As Bad as It's Title Suggests 15% Private Quentin Tarantino Fan | nowhere | 07/24/2010 (1 out of 5 stars) "I guess if you teach a history class or film class, this film could be of use to show just how out of hand jingoism can get in films, or something to that effect. Hey, the more we teach how NOT to make a war film, then it's fine by me.
Otherwise, this film is an utterly worthless piece of jingoistic garbage, a fine example to cherish Band of Brothers, Das Boot, and the other prime WW2 war films even more. Outrageous cringe worthy "America Rules!" moments, s***** battle sequences, dull characters, stupid dialogue, the list of vices go on. If there is a war film vice list, this piece of s*** would be damned for all eternity. Throw in a pointless, underdeveloped love triangle (____!!!!!) and you have ALL the bases covered for one of the worst war films ever. The only good thing about this is Robert Mitchum, but he's only in the film for a short cameo. What a shame. Unless your ready to relieve nostalgia of watching this piece of crap, then do all that you can to avoid this lamer. Recommended with The Green Berets and D-Day Sixth of June.
