In December 2004, close-knit family Maria (Naomi Watts), Henry (Ewan McGregor) and their three sons begin their winter vacation in Thailand. But the day after Christmas, the idyllic holiday turns into an incomprehensible nightmare when a terrifying roar rises from the depths of the sea, followed by a wall of black water that devours everything in its path. Though Maria and her family face their darkest hour, unexpected displays of kindness and courage ameliorate their terror.

One of the best movies that I have seen in yea... EVER! A beautifully told story of survival. The cinematography is unbelievable, so is the acting, so is the plot, so is the movie!

Emotional engaging film about one particular family's experience during the 2004 Dec. 26 tsunami that hit Thailand. The family in the film is based on a real family, though their nationality and name were altered for the film, for whatever reason. The depiction of the event itself is horrifying (but still probably not as horrifying at the real event was) and well done.
Good casting with solid performances by Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts and Tom Holland as their oldest son. Though not a lot of time was spent on peripheral characters, we still get glimpses of the pain and loss that were everywhere after the event.
