In December 2004, close-knit family Maria (Naomi Watts), Henry (Ewan McGregor) and their three sons begin their winter vacation in Thailand. But the day after Christmas, the idyllic holiday turns into an incomprehensible nightmare when a terrifying roar rises from the depths of the sea, followed by a wall of black water that devours everything in its path. Though Maria and her family face their darkest hour, unexpected displays of kindness and courage ameliorate their terror.

I love movies based on true stories and this one is incredible. I can't imagine living through this. Great acting, great CGI effects.

Grab the tissues. Charge up the defibrillator. Watts got an Academy nod but I think the 3 sons were the stars here. Great acting from 5yo to teen Tom Holland. Based on a true story of the 12/24/04 200ft high wave of the tsunami which killed 200,000 from 14 countries (many tourists). Filmed in a totally believable manner. No corny lines. Dirty, gritty + heartwarming. Straight up, one of the best movies I've seen this year.

this film was difficult to rate. i decided i didn't like it but not for the reasons i normally would cite. it is very well made, the acting is excellent across the board, even by the children, it looks good (cinematography) and the story is certainly fascinating and inspirational but i felt the film was a let down. i felt that it failed to fully document the horror and tragedy that occured during the thai tsunami and also failed to adequately express the potential for survival and the coming together of people after such a event. maybe they tried too hard to balance those things or maybe it just wasn't written well, i'm not sure. i just know that i found it to be plodding and was not fully engaged by it. the scenes of the young mother and her son during the actual moments of the tsunami are incredibly filmed and it may be worth a look just for those scenes.
