A real hidden jewel of mystery and suspense! A must watch!

I would classify this movie as a white elephant. I absolutely LOVED it. Two elderly sisters (Judi Dench and Maggie Smith) enjoying their meager life, tucked away from everyone else, until a wounded young man enters their lives. The jealousy begins!

Oh yes...truly enjoyed this film...two of my very favorite actresses, as well. I loved the music so much that I purchased the sound track!

Very touching story of an elderly lady who realizes her life is coming to a gradual end, and she suddently wants to experience love. The problem is the object of her affection is much younger. Her sister tries to get her to come to terms with this but it causes difficulty. This is a delightful story and one I would highly recommend to women. Particularly women who are getting on in life, but it is still a wonderful story without car chases, murder, swearing, and sex. That might turn some off, but it was wonderful for me.

This is a sweet little movie about two elderly sisters who live on the coast in Cornwall, England. One morning after a storm they discover a young man washed up on the beach. They quickly call for a doctor, and, as he recovers in their home, one of the sisters realizes she's lived her entire life without romance and develops an embarrassing crush on him. There is no gripping plot, but the combination of Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and beautiful classical music make this worth watching.
If you like the typical modern American movie full of violence, foul language and gratuitous sex and violence with unbelievable, over-the-top acting, then this movie is not for you. If, instead, you appreciate superb acting and a good, subtle story in an English period setting, you should enjoy Ladies in Lavender. (There is one brief scene involving bad language).

Ladies, if you want to keep your man, don't make him watch this movie. I thought with this cast it would be tolerable, but nothing would make me watch this movie again; I would rather have my chest waxed. In fact if I truly hated someone I still wouldn't make them watch this movie. It was well acted of course (with this cast how couldn't it be?) but the story was just completely uninteresting.
Horrible.

I had never heard of this movie but love Judi Dench. Fell instantly and totally in love with everything about it...the story, cinematography, acting, and in particular the music. I have very few movies in my permanent collection, but this one is a real keeper for viewing many times over.

A diamond among the stones...

"I just received and watched Ladies in Lavender and really never even heard of it before and ordered it on the strength of Judi Dench being in it. I was not disappointed in this beautiful film. I loved the acting, the scenery and the music was absolutely wonderful. People have complained about the plot being thin, the ending not explaining questions that supposedly were not answered to some critical viewers satisfaction. THAT did not bother me. I enjoyed a beautiful simple story that made me laugh, weep and cheer with joy as I watched it and at the end I reluctantly left it in my DVD player until I can find the time to have the peace and quiet to replay it again and again to my utter and complete hearts content. This is a simple and uncomplicated film that to me was charming and very endearing."
Delightful Melodrama About Two Sisters

"LADIES IN LAVENDER was a delightful story about two middle-age sisters who nurse a shipwrecked young Polish man back to health. Over a short period of time both sisters find themselves captivated by this young man. They learn that he is a skilled violinist. And, for different reasons each sister develops an affection for him that's based on their need to nurture. But also, and perhaps more confounding, this charming young man triggers unsettling feelings and memories of young unrequited love and longing.
I don't think the theme in this movie could have succeeded without the talent of Judi Dench and Maggie Smith. Dench's character, Ursula is especially [emotionally] complicated because she finds herself drawn to this young man with somewhat of a school girl 'crush' ... feeling all the more awkward and confusing because it is a yearning that was never fulfilled in her youth.
What was remarkable about this pleasant film is that it captivated the sentiments and rivalry of these two sisters, while at the same time it showed the close ties each had toward one another.
Best of all there was a bit of lite humor throughout the film, and I enjoyed the cinematography of the English coastline and the small town scenes.
Finally, although I found this film pleasantly entertaining, the soundtrack featuring the brilliant talent of the violinist, Joshua Bell made watching the film all the more enjoyable.
I enjoyed, LADIES IN LAVENDER immensely. I hope you will too.
