A Fast-Paced, Fun and Satisfying Early Hitchcock
Cara Holman | Portland, OR | 11/01/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is early Hitchcock at its best. When an avalanche stalls the train in a small European village in the late 1930's, an unlikely cast of characters is thrown together: a young socialite unenthusiastically heading back to England for her wedding, a clarinetist collecting local folk songs, two English gentlemen oblivious to everything but the latest cricket match, a man traveling clandestinely with his mistress and a drab elderly governess.

En route to England at last, the governess, Miss Froy mysteriously disappears and a search for her ensues. At once an intriguing mystery, a psychological drama, a romance, and a suspenseful thriller, this short movie was as much an indictment of the complacency of pre-World War II Europe as simply an entertaining, fun and satisfying film. Highly recommended.
