It was interesting to think about how "clueless" the king and queen of France were about what was happening to the country and to the common people. Is there a lesson to be learned here for our political leaders today?

Sofia Coppola has created a fun, entertaining film about this iconic and baffling queen. I especially enjoyed the quirks and the portrayal of opulence in dress, food, and rituals.

I enjoyed this movie but at the end felt unfulfilled. Yes, we know Marie Antoinette lived a life of excess and Louis the XVI was distant, but the audience can handle the portrayal of their ultimate end! No need to spare us the death scene, Miss Coppola. Entertainment value was exquisite, but historical value leaves you wanting for more. Nevertheless, part of my permanent collection.

Sofia Coppola did Awesome! The costumes, the actors, and you want to know the real Interior Architecture of the times of actual Versailles She uses the Actual Architecture, and France! She takes liberty on making the colors and fashion more young and extravagant making the movie eye candy to the average fashion and interior designer. Kirsten Dunst does a great job as Antoinette and Rip Torn as her Father in Law. All in all the best Antoinette movie I've seen. Its coming from Antoinette's point of view going from Austria as a teenager to France to unite the two in a marriage to a young prince. She and her young husband who doesnt have a clue about girls have to rule France soon after their wedding. And like most teens should have been taught to save money better. Grrrr!!!!

Really a disappointment. Unless you have some idea of history, this would not make any sense. Big disappointing ending as well.

If you enjoy learning about historical people and events through film, then I would not recommend this movie. This story is so vague and goes into so little detail about Marie Antoinette's life that I don't believe I know anything more about her than I did before I watched the film. In fact, I think I knew more before I watched it since, unbelievably, the writer didn't even bother to include the famous events in her life such as, oh I don't know, THE LOSS OF HER HEAD! However, if you're a big fan of Kirsten Dunst's, and I do mean a BIG fan; and if you enjoy films that modernize historical events/stories (the musical credits for this film actually include I Want Candy), then you just might enjoy it. But I chose to watch it in the hopes of learning more than just the fact that Marie Antoinette uttered the words "let them eat cake" and that the last trip she ever took in her life was to the guillotine (which was never revealed), so I was left greatly disappointed. And the fact that the writer decided to end the movie without ever showing the events that unfolded after the royal family escaped from the palace still boggles the mind. And to think that there are actually TWO people in this world (referring to the director here) who both AGREED that that information wasn't necessary to the story still baffles me to this day, and it's been months since I watched this movie. I'm giving it 2 stars ONLY because I loved all the beautiful costumes, and also because Kirsten Dunst is just so darned likable. :)

I was looking forward to this movie due to the trailers but was disappointed with the modern twists at some points and the one dimensional feel of the entire movie. The scenery was excellent but I am not a fan of wide screen movies,it ruins it for me.

I agree with Sara C; this movie is definitely an acquired taste. I thought that it did a good job showing how stifling Marie Antoinette felt when she first arrived in France, how she spent extravagently to drown her unhappiness and boredom, and how disconnected she was from politics. But my goodness, it took a while for them to get to those points! And I felt like the last 45 minutes, which really had the meat of the film (the French people's discontent with court, her personal family troubles, and the culmination) went relatively quickly. They lost a golden opportunity to build up to the end. And speaking of the ending why did it end so abruptly? If you aren't familiar with how Marie Antoinette's life ends, you are left somewhat puzzled. I thought it was a decent film, but I think they could have left some stuff out of the middle and fleshed out the end a lot more. And all those colors in all the costumes made me feel somewhat as if I was trapped inside a giant, garish birthday cake. I liked how 80's music was mixed in, but I think it was misplaced in some spots. And I wish they would have chosen someone else to play Marie. Kirsten Dunst was not the best choice, although I generally love her!
