It's enlightening to view Tim Burton's Mars Attacks! as his twisted satire of the blockbuster film Independence Day, which was released earlier the same year, although the movies were in production simultaneously. Burton's...  more »

Tim Burton's schlocky-on-purpose salute to '50s alien-invasion flicks (based on a vintage Topps trading card series)is goofy, cartoonish fun... though with an all star cast that includes Jack Nicholson (in a dual role), Glenn Close, Pierce Brosnan, "Gentleman" Jim Brown, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Michael J. Fox (to name just a few) I expected much more. Burton seems so assured that merely *having* all these big names in his movie is funny, that he never gives any of them anything funny to do. Instead, they simply stand around slack jawed in horror while the sadistic, bug-eyed alien invaders vaporize everything in sight. Even though the Martians are purely CGI creations, they somehow manage to steal the movie from the human cast. Go figure.

It's old hat that Warner weren't keen on Mars Attacks! however I had hoped a change within the company would have resulted in a darn site more respect being bestowed upon its blu ray release. None of the extras from the dvd are carried over, and the transfer is another of Warner's (hello Eraser!) dull, noise/grain reduced and thus lacking that HD quality pop releases. Fine detail is seriously lacking, so much so, there's nowhere near the step up from sd-dvd it should have been.

Save your hard earned, it's not worth buying.

Warner please get your finger out and rerelease this as a special edition with a restored transfer.
