I didn't realize that Cannonball! and Gumball Rally both came out about 3 weeks apart in 1976 until I looked them up on IMDB. While Cannonball! has a few nice cars and Veronica Hamel, I thought Gumball Rally was a much better movie. There were some hokey stunts, a ridiculous car crash pile-up, and a lame attempt at trying to tie the movie to NASCAR by repeatedly saying "what happened at Darlington in '72." If you're a fan of Bullitt, you may pick up on the chase that develops between a black Charger and a green Mustang! Can you say "ripoff?" It's an OK movie, but Gumball Rally was much better.

Fast Company was a little better. Most of the movie gave drag racing a fair shake, but it was still sensationalized a bit too much for my taste. It's a great look back at the funny cars nearing the end of the time when you could still look at them and identify the model without having to read the name. It's definitely worth a watch if you're a drag racing fan.
