I really like this modern version! The actors (who can really sing well), the story (a tragic love story), the modern music, the fabulous costumes! Fun!!!

I cannot stand this film! Too confusing! A lot of singing and no clue what is going on. I understand it is a musical, but there should have been a little bit more acting in it to get the gist of what was going on in the plot.

I did not like this film. It was too chaotic, and I usually like chaotic. At 2hrs 7min it's way too long. They could have cut it down to 1hr 45 easily. I liked most of the song numbers and the acting was decent, but other than that I would not recommend this movie.

I throughly enjoyed this movie, a mixed tale of love, lust that leads to self deception. I also really like Nicole Kidman who before seeing this movie, I did not know sang

Honestly, I didn't care for this movie. Reviews have often been positive. A bit too positive, I think. For me, this movie was more than a bit of a mess the entire way through.
I mean, I get what they were TRYING to do. For me, it just fell completely flat.
The basic premise is something of a comedy of errors mixed with a love story and told through song and dance. But it just never seemed to gel, for me.
For one thing, the musical numbers were a mish-mash of little snippets of other musical numbers from musicals, popular/rock music (Queen, Madonna, etc. etc.)... Whether that's terribly original or not, I don't know. I mean, I myself have occasionally fancied doing the same thing: mashing up related lyrics from different songs to create a new story. (Eg. Jamie is Crying + It's My Party and I'll Cry if I Want To + Jamie's Got a Gun.) I mean, I can see the attraction of such mashups.
Again, for me, it just didn't work. I wanted to like it. It was colorful, if nothing else. It wanted to be 'expansive' and bold, but, I don't know, at the same time it felt somehow claustrophobic and too Gilliam-esque (not unlike The Adventures of Baron Munchausen) with all the tight-in close-ups and awkward scenes.

BAZ LUHRMAN is a Director's director, to pull together all the chaos that was this movie and force it to flow smoothly through what-ever medium you watch it with is rewarding to the senses like a fine tawney port...My wife and I spent an entire evening watching the special edition copy which has the Absinth Fairy in the corner whenever there is a piece pertinant either to the plot line or the history of the real Moulin Rouge, or any other interesting info. Then we dug into the "EXTRA" DVD and enjoyed it as much as the movie.
Another "KEEPER"...

Moulin Rouge is a bit of a whirlwind. The underlying plot of the movie is very simple and frankly nothing new but with it's visual and audio detail the movie becomes a real masterpiece. Moulin Rouge is a contemporary musical by Baz Luhrmann. It is part of a trilogy of movies made by Luhrmann that includes Romeo & Juliet, Moulin Rouge, and Strictly Ballroom. Baz decided he wanted to create movies that used different forms of expression to move the plot. Romeo and Juliet used the art of language, Strictly Ballroom used the art of dance, and Moulin Rouge uses the art of music for the characters to express their emotions. This is my favorite of the three.
The costume and set designs in Moulin Rouge really are quite fantastic. Lots and lots of color and extravagance galore. This is a musical but not the standard musical of the past. Many of the songs are actually based on songs that are familiar to most everyone but yet the songs are original in the way they are composed. Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman are the two main characters of the movie and they actually sing their vocals and surprisingly they are able to pull it off. True, neither of them will likely be opera singers but their singing is not unpleasant. This is a movie that everyone should see at least once. It is a movie I don't expect will ever be able to be duplicated to the quality and fun that Luhrmann was able to pull off.
