This movie certainly had the budget going into it, and the special effects are top notch for the day. Statham delivers on his usual capabilities around martial arts, and I suppose his action scenes are probably the best parts of the film. I never played the video game that this movie is based on, and so I can forgive a certain amount of campy dialogue as the film does its best to closely follow what I assume was the plot of the game. Liotta and Reynolds do a decent job, but it's tough to see them outside of their usual typecast roles and take them seriously here. There are some interesting takes on combat units in a fantasy setting and such, but overall the plot and story are pretty cliche. The film is probably too long and feels like they are just padding it, especially during the mud slide combat scenes. I would have rated the film slightly higher had the director given some attention to a post-climax resolution. Seemingly the whole subplot around the female lead magus is simply dropped after Statham kisses his wife . . . what? Roll credits here? Why not cut some of the dead weight from the middle of the movie and give us a decent ending? Show Statham on the throne with some kind of ceremony or something. I suspect these are some of the reasons this film performed poorly - which is too bad, it had all the elements and money to make it a successful niche cult movie.

Uwe Boll is the new Ed Wood. Scratch that he makes Wood's movies seem good. Another video game adaptation that is a resounding failure. Horrible movie.

I know it is all to cool too hate Boll, but the real problem with this is the script, not just direction. Without the laughable dialog, this would only be mediocre bad. Sure a lot can be blamed on the script(deserving of blame), but all these actors are very poor as well. If not for the length, it would have been fun.

I think the budget was spent on the cast and special effects so there was little left for a script, let alone to hire a decent director. The special effects are pretty incredible. The battle scenes are well choreographed and the music isn't half bad but then you find scenes like the one with Kristanna Loken as Elora, a vine swinging tough chick who declares that men are not welcome in her forest and has the screen presence of a stick.
Ray Liotta gets the biggest laughs as he tries desperately to be the insane baddie. I just couldn't take him seriously and I am not sure he could, either. Maybe he needed the money?
To my surprise the saving grace of this whole fiasco is Matthew Lillard ("Scream") who shines as the sniveling, traitorous, Duke Fallow. Yes, he plays it over the top, but in a snooze fest of performances, Lillard can't help but shine.
