Kevin Costner doesn't usually do this type (scary) of movies so it was interesting to watch the transformation, which he did well. Not too scary, but enough to keep you interested.

ASPECT RATIO: A weird thing about this film's aspect ratio...
The streaming version available on Vudu is of the 1:78 aspect ratio. The DVD's 2:35 version is in fact just a crop-job of that 1:78 version. Large amounts of visual information are lopped off the top and bottom to produce a false 2:35 version. I cannot speak to what is on the blu-ray edition, but the packaging on both indicate a 2:35 aspect ratio.

THE NEW DAUGHTER is an eerie change of pace for Kevin Costner. This is old school horror and makes for a chilling experience in a slow seductive way.
Costner is a newly divorced father, who suddenly has custody of his two kids, a son and teenaged daughter. He moves them to a beautiful old house in South Carolina. The son is very excited about the move, but the daughter is hostile and angry at the world.
The tone of the movie is set early on, when Louisa is looking out her bedroom window at night and we see something large skitter across the roof. That unexpected visual made me gasp.
Another plus for the movie is while we're gearing up for another "possessed child" movie, THE NEW DAUGHTER utilizes a rarely used horror element. While the kids are outside, they come across a large burial mound on their property. This is never a good thing.
I was pleasantly surprised by THE NEW DAUGHTER and enjoyed it very much. The Indian burial mound hooked me right away. The concept and reality of burial mounds have always intrigued me. What kind of people created them? What was their purpose? And why do we have so many of them, scattered across the United States?
THE NEW DAUGHTER answers some of these questions with very satisfying results. Check out THE NEW DAUGHTER and leave your expectations at the door.
And put your beloved household pets in a safe place. Because some things in the night are hungry.
Very hungry.
