What is Family?

""The New World" ("Le Noveau Monde")

What is Family?

Amos Lassen

"The New World" directed by Etienne Dhaene takes a look at the concept of family and then lets us know that family is an individual creation. Our main characters are a lesbian couple who live in Paris and have their lives take a turn when one of them announces at a karaoke club that she wants to have a baby.

The movie is a witty look at modern lesbian life and the gay baby boon that has come into being of late. Luis (Natalia Dontcheva) dreams about becoming a mother. Her partner Marion (Vanessa Larre) is not really hot on the idea. They talk it out and they inform their parents of what they are thinking about even though Marion is not really excited about it. Luis suddenly has a different opinion of babies and when the sperm donor wants more involvement in the life of the child and the two women break up. There are lots of witticisms here but there are also several problems. It is an interesting look at modern life.
