I just saw "Nosferatu" by Robert Eggers, a filmmaker I cannot praise highly enough based solely on the strength of his 2015 debut film, "The VVitch."

But first, let's talk about Spongebob.

Here's the problem with the whole Nosferatu/Dracula story - it's been done to death. Starting with the silent era of film (1921), there have been nearly 100 adaptations of Bram Stoker's original work (however derivative, or shall we say "adjacent"). Every generation has their own big-budget adaptation of the Dracula mythology, my own being Francis Ford Coppola's rather indulgent "Bram Stoker's Dracula" from 1992.

Season 2, Episode 16 of Spongebob Squarepants introduced Nosferatu to a whole new generation, and Eggers is on record as saying this is what inspired him to create this new adaptation of the Stoker material.

No, really.

So for us, uh..."older" viewers...we've seen this story before. I'm not deeply invested in the Dracula mythology and I can't say I've seen any other faithful adaptations aside from the Coppola one and now this one by Eggers, so while watching this version I found myself saying yep, he hit that beat...and then he needs to hit the next beat...there is is, okay, now we need to hit this beat...nothing was particularly *surprising* to me about it.

Eggers comes from a theater background, and his productions are nothing less than "theatrical" - intricately-designed sets, moody lighting, period-correct dialogue, and, usually, riveting performances. I can't criticize Eggers for much on those fronts, but I do question the casting of Lily Rose Depp - I haven't seen any of her other films but I haven't heard good things, and I wasn't terribly impressed with her performance in this one. I read she was a replacement for Anya Taylor-Joy, and unfortunately those are some big shoes to fill. William Dafoe and Ralph Ineson (FINCHY!!) turn in decent performances.

I'm hoping Eggers returns to an original story next time around, this one just left me kinda bored. I didn't feel much. And believe me, when I watch a movie, I *feel* it. I cried at the end of "Bring It On," those kids cheering their little hearts out...

Anyway, I give Nosferatu a straight B.

Oh, and here's the Nosferatu drinking game: take a shot any time someone vomits up blood. You'll be fuuuuuucked up by the end.

This thing went too far especially the ending. Some will enjoy though. Johnny's daughter Lily-Rose Depp continues his creepy and odd films.
