I first saw portions of this delightful movie on a christian channel one Saturday night. Amazingly, I just happen to do a search up here and found it. It is a startling view of reality before child labor laws and animal rights were created. The adorable "Willie" portrays a child forced to carry a heavy load in order to care for his family in a dark dangerous mine with a "Pit Pony" also forced to work in the mine. His nemesis "Simon" is saved by Willie, but loses his beloved " Pit Pony" in a cave-in. An all around great christian movie. 1 of 1 member(s) found this review helpful. Sandra F. The miners ranged in age from 7-8 years all the way to grandfathers. This mine was unsafe and kept having collapses. They imported small ponies from Sable Island to pull the coal carts. This was a story based on fact until Nova Scotia finally banned using children in the mines. I liked this movie and would give it four stars. 1 of 1 member(s) found this review helpful.
Movie ReviewsWhat a treasure of a film i found in the $5.50 bin at Walmar Brother Shane | USA | 11/16/2005 (4 out of 5 stars) "Set in the turn of the 19th century, on the island of Nova Scotia. It's about an Irish-Scottish coal mining family and the hardships they face. It's very realistic in it's portrayal of home life of that period...and a nice performance by the young lady playing the oldest daughter (who just happens to look a lot like Megan Follows). It's not really a typical horse film, and definately not for the tiny tots, but it is an enjoyable and worthwhile family film for anyone above the age of 8. There are some mature and scary themes, including death of family members (One body being displayed on the kitchen table). So you'll want to use discretion. Overall it's not a great film, but it is very well made and well acted. Young boys of ten an older will surely benefit from watching it. As there are some good messages to learn from the story. **** 4 Stars! Highly recommended." It is a story about a young boy who loves horses and hates the coal mine his father and brother work in. After his father is injured, the boy has no choice but to work in the scary and dangerous coal mine to provide for his family. He is surprised to see a horse he befriended in the mine, also. They work together, and through gloomy times the young boy stays positive. It makes me appreciate what I have!"
