Member Movie Reviews Michael G. (mgmirkin) from PORTLAND, OR Reviewed on 7/11/2010... If you've seen Quarantine, you've seen Rec. Quarantine was basically a scene-for-scene reproduction of Rec. Not even a reboot, or re-imagining. Pretty literally a precise American remake. Wouldn't be surprised if they found a copy of the script to Rec and made Quarantine based on that. There are maybe a couple minor differences, but nothing to write home about. Both are good zombie/horror films. If you absolutely must see the original film, Rec is certainly a worthwhile film, but don't expect any major new revelations. There's some minor additional content toward the end of Rec that hints at something supernatural going on. But I don't think it's essential to see Rec just for that. I saw Quarantine first after someone steered me to it, then found out about [REC]. Quarantine is good, better than serviceable, but [REC] is far superior … and is the definite go-to 'version.' It goes without saying that the remake/American version dumbs down the proceedings a bit, especially opting {I can not fathom why} to leave out a tidbit towards the end that takes the whole thing to a completely different level and makes the 'horror' of the film resonate far more. I hear that the sequel ups the ante even more and does [REC] justice. POSTSCRIPT: I just saw [REC] 2. What a fantastic sequel. Easily on par with the first … and it drives home why the American remake is weak for opting out of the "twist" that sent the first one into new territory. I keep reading that there isn't much difference between the original and the Americanized version: that's flat out wrong and misleading. There's a major difference, in context and in the mission of the film … If you've seen Quarantine only, [REC] 2 will make, basically, no sense for the most part. Or, will seem like some outrageous leap. If you've seen [REC] and Quarantine and don't think there is a difference other than one in English, one in Spanish, then don't bother with the sequel until you've re-watched them. 3 of 3 member(s) found this review helpful. Both films are worth watching, but you with Quarantine you don't have to read subtitles or sit through an extremely bad English dub.
