Based on a true story and a must for dog lovers!

RED DOG starring Josh Lucas and Rachel Taylor is a little known movie here in the USA. Based on a true story that originated and was filmed on location at the dusty town of Dampier in far western Australia, where there is actually a statue as a tribute to this remarkable dog. The dog actor "Koko" spent almost a year training for this role; and in the hands of his trainer does a convincing job of storytelling. A heartwarming story of a Kelpie/Cattle dog in the Pilbara region of Australia in the 1970's, this was staged during the time when life was free but involved sweaty backbreaking work in the iron ore fields of northwest Australia; all to make money--reminiscent of the attitude during the Forty-Niners Gold Rush era. Red Dog had no master, yet he was every man's dog affecting many of the townsfolk in a meaningful way as shared by the film. Then one day Red Dog found his true master; he picked John Stazzonelli (played by Josh Lucas) as his master, when John rescued Red Dog from a compromising situation. However, through an unfortunate circumstance in this hard-scrabble country, his master meets an untimely end. Yet, the story does not end there. Intriguingly the story line follows Red Dog as he searches for his lost John. On this remarkable journey Red Dog builds his reputation as the "Pilbara Wanderer"--being known all over Australia. It was even rumored that Red Dog visited Japan.
Laughing then crying, only to laugh again, this story carries you through a similar gamut of feelings as experienced in the Disney classic "Old Yeller". So, if Old Yeller appealed to you, then you should similarly enjoy this telling of a story about man's best friend--but this time, it's the whole town's best friend.
Rated PG only due to occasional crusty language and brief suggested adult situations.
...Sometimes you pick the dog...sometimes the dog picks you....
You should pick this one.
