Member Movie Reviews Marianna S. (Angeloudi) from HOLIDAY, FL Reviewed on 12/31/2008... I ordered this movie partly because it has my favorite French actress, Sandrine Bonnaire, in it. It is set in 1944 in Nazi-occupied Belgium, where an American pilot is shot down, then hidden and nursed back to health by members of the Maquis, the organized Resistance group fighting the Nazis. He is hidden in the home of Claire Daussois, wife of a Resistance leader. Part love story, part war movie, this film shows an ultimate act of heroism at the end. In French with English subtitles.

Julia Ormand is fine, but Bill Paxton is beyond just bad. This is a movie about the Belgium resistance against the Nazis, complete with the execution of half a village, and here comes Paxton like he is in a Mary Poppins movie. It boggles the mind. The background for the movie: the old house, the village, the other village people, is all pretty authentic. This is a movie that you can watch just as a story, not about war, not about great acting, not about special effects. Just a story." |
