R&B legend Rick James was one of the most influential black musicians of all time. As an artist, songwriter and producer, James provided the funky hits that resuscitated Motown Records in the late ?70s. His Punk Funk s... more »ound updated the label?s style and saw it through the mid-?80s. By 1981, Rick was at the peak of his commercial success with the platinum selling Street Songs album and the hit singles "Super Freak" and "Give It to Me Baby." The following year, Rick James & the Stone City Band took the stage in Essen, Germany to open the 10th Rockpalast-Festival. This 1982 performance was the first time James played in Europe, bringing his brand of American Punk Funk to a whole new audience. Together with the Stone City Band, James did not disappoint, burning up the stage with his trademark sound and special effects. Now for the first-time, this classic performance is available on DVD. Featuring classic hits like "You and I," "Mary Jane," and of course, "Super Freak," this is Rick James at his very best. Super Freak 1982 is not only a must-have collectors item but also a fitting tribute to an R&B legend. Track Listing: 1. Intro 2. Ghetto Life 3. Big Time 4. All Day All Night 5. Freaky 6. "People People People Please! If you have ever seen Rick James live you would know this is the real Rick James. The one that showed up for the show but forgot to bring the show with him. The band was cooking soul food while Rick was in the backstage eating. When he was on stage he was rushing through it all so he could get backstage to Mary Jane. I love Rick James but let's face it, this was one that should have got away. I was very upset buying this junk, it's not how I want to remmember Rick James. If he had spent more time on the set and actually sing his songs than jumping around and messing with the crowd, who you could feel they wanted Rick to cut to the chase and stop getting them up for a flash of James. ONE STAR!"

"back in the day nobody was out-Funking Rick James. together with the stone City Band Rick James always had a smoking Synth,Guitar, bass,Synth Driven Groove that kept Heads Bopping.then he could turn around&make a smoothed out slow Jam. very Versatile Soul brother. I have seen this concert for years.Rick showcased how He got down. this was Rick in His Prime&Peak.Rick was Sharp, funky&funny all at once. this is a Must have show for any fan of the Funk. Rick James was the last Great funkateer this show showcases the bandleader in Rick&How His Band was on Point from start to Finish."

"When I saw this DVD I got excited. I'm a fan of Rick James and of all funk music, so I had to have it. What a let down. The music sounds rushed and sloppy, (probably 'cause they're all baked) not to mention that the guitarist is faking the funk trying to be Van Halen. This DVD is poor quality. I think it was filmed in Germany with someone's personal camcorder. I don't want to hear "well it wasn't bad considering it was 1982". The sound sucks and the picture does too... Check out Earth Wind & Fire's 1981 In Concert DVD. Earth Wind & Fire: In Concert That's a better quality DVD... There is one funny part in this Rick James DVD though... The Ganja Opera Song. Buy this DVD only if you're gonna get stoned and laugh at this song."

"As a huge fan of the original Punk-Funker, I was very excited to receive this for my birthday! The band was TIGHT! I never saw him in concert (I was too young then) but to see him on DVD has truly made my year! Rick kept the crowd going, even after he and the band finished their set and left the stage!
My highlights for me has got to be the MARY JANE MARCH (showing Rick giving a nod to Leopold), ALL DAY ALL NIGHT, & FREAKY!
A must have for Rick James fans!"

"It's not the best concert, but it's worth checking out if you like Rick James."
