"Saint Maud" is about a young home-care nurse who converts to Christianity as a means of dealing with a tragedy on a previous gig. Here we have a much better example of characters and story that are worthy of the atmosphere they inhabit. The film is definitely a slow burn but moves quickly through its 84-minute run time, and I was also impressed by its ability to ratchet up tension while mostly avoiding cliches and tropes. My only complaint is in its simplicity - there's nothing too deep here, woman becomes a fundie and goes insane. Or...goes insane and becomes a fundie? Hmmm....  Whitney B. Maud is a reclusive young nurse whose impressionable demeanour causes her to pursue a pious path of Christian devotion after an obscure trauma.
