Incredibly beautiful film, with rock-solid (and classic) performances by Jean Arthur, Van Heflin, Jack Palance and -- of course -- Alan Ladd as the mysterious gunfighter who wins the heart of a prairie family. Long considered as a contender for the best Western ever made, "Shane" is a tribute to both fine story-telling (the novel was by Jack Schaeffer) and blockbuster movie-making (George Stevens at his best). Ladd, often scorned for being wooden (the studio forced him into that mold), just radiates danger, and both the barroom brawl he engages in and the final shootout in Grafton's saloon are two of the most iconic and memorable moments of the film. Highly recommended for all ages -- especially for young people, who know nothing about this style of movie-making and story-telling. 1 of 1 member(s) found this review helpful.
