It's Sky Captain to the rescue in this high-flying adventure where he must team up with intrepid reporter Polly Perkins and Captain Franky Cook to stop the evil Dr. Totenkopf from carrying out his plan to destroy the world!
Jude Law is an ace mercenary fighter pilot who has to save the Earth - and his plucky girl-reporter love interest - from a mad scientist who's threatening the world with an army of giant robots. This big-budget retro-futuristic action flick set in an alternate-universe 1930s is kinda like a high tech "Rocketeer."
Visually "Sky Captain" is a trip - the film mixes influences from Indiana Jones, Tim Burton's "Batman," 1930s pulp magazines, and Max Fleischer's WWII "Superman" cartoons. Story-wise it's pretty basic, old fashioned movie-serial action - i.e. nothing to write home about - but the film's unique look makes up for it. Oh, and Gwyneth Paltrow is cute as hell as the Lois Lane-style damsel in distress.
This flick tanked when it was released in 2004 but it's worth a look!

I enjoyed this movie, it's the type of film i watch over & over. Fun & campy, but in a good way. Done in the style of the old black n' white films, with the modern extras. Well done! Wish they had done another.

Awful film that attempts to pay homage to serials, but fails to entertain. The cgi is overbearing and the actors deliver performances that should have remained on the cutting room floor.

The movie had style... a unique idea... but lacked in all other areas. The acting was borderline annoying at times and Angelina Jolie didn't add much to the villian area. It felt like a bad 50s serial with a higher budget. So in a way it succeeded in that respect... however, it still felt like a BAD 50's serial. So I guess you get what you're expecting.

Ok, I might be in the minority here, but I really liked this movie. The plot is good and the actors are great in my opinion. It reminds me of that old War of the World movie back in the day. The special effects are cool. It is a bit of a cheesy movie, but the director must have the Midas touch because he/she pulls it off well. I watched this in the movie theatre and I watched the DVD a few times at home. After 4 or 5 viewings, it's time to move onto other great DVDs.

This had a very cool look to it in the trailer. Like they were making a movie based on the covers of all those of Science Fiction Space travel books from the 50s. Didn't like it. I've have to give this one, two thumbs down and until next week, the balcony is closed.
P.S. My leg fell asleep while I was writing this review. Pins & needles, cramping, ouchhhhh.

"I really feel this movie didn't get the credit it deserves by both critics and people that watched it, I don't understand what was it they didn't like about it or what was it they expected from it, yes I agree the script was not the greatest but the special effects more than makes up for it and the acting was very good as well but to me what takes the cake is the feel of the movie 1940's noir kind of thing I wish they would make more movies like this. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.!!!"

"It is always a pleasure to comment on a movie that is so entertaining. From the outtakes in the Special Features, the actors looked to have had a great time during the filming. The special effect are more enhanced in the Blu-ray format. I have added this title to my special collection. Bravo!"

"I don't know what the director had in mind for this movie, but for me this film is a sort of inspired comedy. Carl Sagan once observed that modern science fiction movies are actually adventure movies that lack any tangible reference to science. This is certainly the case here--but made all the more obvious by the fact that this world is made to seem to rely on twentieth century technology. The effect of a flying aircraft carrier appearing out of nowhere to refuel the hero's single engine P-40 like fighter (a model of military industrial complex inefficiency and over budget thinking) was shocking to behold! The explicit impossibility of this world seemed to exalt in technical absurdities rather than attempt to paper them over. For my son and I (both of us engineers)--the surprising appearance of each incredible scene evoked uproarious laughter!
I should also say that I loved the Art Deco look of everything from malevolent robots and rocket ships to newsrooms and skyscrapers. It reminds me of the Forbidden Planet era conception of streamlined spacecraft that I enjoyed as a small child at the dawn of the space age. How disappointing clunky are real space vehicles when compared to the clean lines of one of the shapely rocket arc seen in the final scenes of this movie--a veritable finned Cadillac of the heavens!
