Kurt Russell hits new heights in laconic action heroes with his portrayal of Sergeant Todd, born and bred to be a soldier in a futuristic army. Raised to kill mercilessly, living only for battle, he finds himself at the t... more »wilight of his career (and so-called life) when a regiment of genetically enhanced warriors threatens to make his brand of soldiering obsolete. Despite his extensive skills, he is no match for the best of breed of the new order, and he's left for dead on a planet that serves only as a junk heap. There he encounters a ragtag group of castaways, and in his own strange and silent way slowly begins to learn how to be less a killer and more a human. All is disrupted, though, when the genetic regiment arrives on the trash planet and decides to eradicate the local human "trespassers." Though Todd had been overmatched before, this time he has more than ever to fight for--a home, and friends. Soldier is one of those rare sci fi movies that relies more on plot and action than special effects (though the trash planet is effectively wrought). The pace of action in the last half of the film is relentless and exciting, and Russell's portrayal of the old warrior as he warms to human emotions relies more on expression than words--in fact, he barely utters more than a half-dozen lines. --Tod Nelson« less
Some great actors and actresses in this but it just did not pan out. Move along!

A solid action film for those looking for testosterone, body count and vengeance. Russell (approx age 47 at the time) and Lee are seriously buffed up for their roles, and Nielson is easy on the eyes. It is a stereotypical "guys" film with adequate back story, development, and build up to the climax fighting. Gary Busey is very good as the officer for the old soldiers.

Kurt Russell, looks really good in this movie. Muscles rippling everywhere. He plays the perfect soldier who has been literally dumped on a waste planets becasue there is a better model.... Ha Ha Ha, He is the best model and proves it, wiping out the whole crew of new soldiers out to protect the innocent people of the waste planet. This is not like his role in escape fomr New York. Here he plays that sheriif has to protect teh town heoer and does it well, and did I say he looks really good in this movie. Eye candy for the women. Lots of blowing up objects and fire everywhere for teh men. Great movie, using old technology.nN computer generation, and it works.

I agree with Brian: this movie is great! Not only is this movie unjustly underappreciated, but so is Kurt Russell; he's one of the best actors around! (Can't wait for this one to come out in Blu-Ray.)

This is a great action flick that is hiding a more meaningful message. What happens when someone is at the top of their game, but suddenly finds themselves outclassed by a younger, better person? Now, take that a step further and assume that the penalty for being obsolete is not just a blow to the ego, but being thrown in a trash bin? That is exactly what happens when Todd (Kurt Russell), who is a genetically altered soldier, finds that a new breed of soldier is taking his place. But Todd is there to not only show them that sometimes old dogs can learn new tricks, but they can also kick a lot of ass in the process. Great visuals and effects round out this underappreciated gem of a sci-fi action flick!

"This is one of my husband's favorite movies. I don't think it's great, but over time I've come to enjoy it. It's what we call a "B" movie, sort of middle-of-the-road - the acting's pretty good, the special effects are OK, the script is fair. Kurt Russell is my husband's favorite actor, so that's probably why the movie ranks so high with him. I watch it for Jason Isaacs.
I had a greater appreciation of the movie after listening to the commentary by the director and others. It's very informative and fairly funny in parts (the interplay between Paul Anderson and Jason Isaacs is very enjoyable). Sometimes I think it helps to hear what they went through while making the movie and why they chose to do this or that. I was amazed to hear that Russell broke his ankle early in the shoot and they had to work around that. I was also surprised that prior to filming he spent over a year in the gym creating his look for the movie. That's dedication.
I won't go over the plot since others have done it very well already. The movie is a Western disguised as a sci-fi story. I don't think it's as derivative of other movies as Anderson's "Event Horizon", which is in its favor.
So, make some popcorn and enjoy the movie - once to hear the dialogue, and once with the commentary on."
