Solid performances by all. No one likes a womanizer so I didn't know if I should hate or feel sorry for Michael Douglas' character. Synopsis: Ben Kalmen (Douglas) had a thriving career, a beautiful family, and a luxury apartment in the heart of Manhattan, but the same irresistible charm that got him to the top is also the cause of his downfall. He desperately attempts to regain his status the only way he knows how: through a woman. Ben Kalmen played by Michael Douglas gets a warning from his Doctor that his ekg was abnormal. He then goes on a self destructive course of action which leads to an ending of his marriage, losing his auto dealerships, and a loss of his lavish lifesyle. I don't think any of the acting performances would win any awards. Overall, the only thing that kept me interested was finding out how far Ben Kalmen would sink. 2 of 2 member(s) found this review helpful.

I really enjoyed this movie...mostly because Michael Douglas, IMHO, has inherited more than a name...he has the enhanced genes of theatrical greatness, but has chosen to be subtle and dignified with his work...he doesn't try to be in every movie out there, but seeks roles where the gloves fit...amazing in his ability to be a likeable bad guy...who finds redemption before the end of the spool... Solitary Man is very apropros of coping mechanisms by "old school machismo" (distinguishes itself from the comedic senior buddy movies out there.) So, Douglas's character "Kalman" has a history of building empires, yet is paralyzingly terrified of his own mortality. Hearing news, about his own fragile health is so unpalatable, that he he wreaks havoc by seducing every female who is at least 25 years or more his junior... His seductions, initially humorous, with an engaging path of risk and consequence, soon turn sour as it obviously becomes his ruin. The Douglas character is very believable when he allows his overcharged libido to avoid real life. The misogyny and objectification of women is curious, especially with the most precious relationship he has...the one with his daughter and grandchild. "Kalman's" Casanovian charms with women become predictable and revolting, though Douglas' character is magnetically charismatic with energy unparalled for someone of his years. The man shines and walks with the swaggering confidence of someone who will never cease to light up the room. Nicely supported by the rest of the cast...who are superb in their peripheral roles. Danny DeVito and Susan Sarandon lend serenity and wisdom to the chaotic whorl of Douglas' journey towards realization. Yup, a fine movie indeed." 3.5 STARS....GREAT ACTORS, MEDIOCRE STORY...... Douglas stars as a former big city car salesman who was at the top of his game....until unscrupulous business practices put an end to it all. What remains is his seemingly insatiable appetite for very young women--no matter the cost. And the cost is high, as his appetite seems to have a negative effect on practically every aspect of his personal life and relationships; from that with his daughter and grandson, to his own girlfriend. And while a health scare may have exacerbated an already healthy appetite for the opposite sex, despite his bad behavior the protagonist is surrounded by a cast of people who have only his best interest in mind. A rather interesting tale, but not a movie I would rave over.
