It's a dark and stormy night and a bickering couple are en-route to a friend's party. Suddenly a car chase is in progress with a pair of policemen trying to apprehend a murder. Enter a doctor and his nurse, desperately rac... more »ing to reach a dying patient. But all of these events are stopped when a local bridge is out. Seeking shelter, the group finds themselves at a spooky old mansion, late home to an infamous occultist and sexual degenerate. A seance is arranged and that provokes a very strange series of events which places our travelers in situations that they never dreamed of.
"Something Creeping In The Dark" starts out like a your basic "old dark house", but what happens in the aftermath is hardly routine. It's filled with quirky touches, bizarre scenes, and offbeat moments. Director Mario Colucci works hard to conjure an ominous atmosphere. Using all manner of techniques, including slow motion, freeze-frame, superimpositions, rapid-fire edits and subjective camera alongside the more usual zooms and extreme close-ups, he demonstrates a firm grasp of how to generate atmosphere and of ways in which to tell a story visually. Like Mario Bava's "Five Dolls for an August Moon", Colucci gets his scares the old-fashioned way - by earning them.
