I feel in love with this movie! I am a Rocky Horror Picture Show die-hard fan. They differ greatly in plot, but stylistically this reminds me of it. In my opinion, would only be better if a corset-clad Tim Curry was somehow worked in. A strong vocal by Johnny Depp as well. I love the movie and the soundtrack!

I really wanted to like this movie because I love just about every movie HB Carter is in. This was predictable and boring. I knew who the old woman was and what was going to happen to HB Carter much before it happened.

I really love this movie. I felt like the cast did a great job with Sondheim's work. Of course, Depp & Carter are no George Hearn & Angela Landsbury, but overall, a really great performance. I love that it's nearly a black and white movie, with only the blood adding color, aside from By The Sea, which is full of vibrant colors. One that I've watched numerous times. Tragic, funny, macabre -- this movie has it all!

This is a wonderful movie version of this dark musical - beautifully filmed in mostly black and white (which makes the bright orange-red, frequently-seen blood more broadway-dramatic), gothic Victorian sets, gorgeous cinematography and stellar acting from all. Granted, you're not going to leave the movie laughing and dancing, but it's a great story with incredible music and heart-breaking irony. I agree with some of the other reviewers in that I wish they had not left out any songs from the original musical, and Helena Bonham Carter is no Angela Lansbury (singing-wise), but this movie stands on its own as a great stage-to-screen musical.

Prior to me watching Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd, I had heard things like this film was pure genius and the best musical ever made. It had been extremely over-hyped and it had nowhere to fall but down prior to me viewing the film. Although, I enjoyed the film and I love almost everything Tim Burton touches it did not blow me away. The thing I enjoyed about this movie the most was the Tim Burton style of the sets and costumes. I just love the way Burton is able to create a world in his movies that is so fantastical yet while you watch the movie it feels like it is a world that exists somewhere.
I do wish this movie dug a little deeper into the character development of the story. For example, I would have loved to see more of the internal struggles that were skimmed over for Helena Bonham Carter's character. Also, with this being a musical I would have liked to have had actor's with a little better singing talent. Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are not terrible but let's face it there are definitely better singers. If this was not a musical and they were just actors in a standard movie, I would consider them perfect for their roles but since this is a musical I think there could have been a better casting to include those with a stronger singing talent.
Although I did not love this movie as much as others, I would still recommend this film as one to watch. Just as a warning, there is quite a bit of violence and gore. The gore is over-exaggerated enough to not make it too realistic but this is definitely no Sound of Music.

YOU HAVE TO LIKE MUSICALS TO LIKE THIS ONE

"Tim Burton's version of Sweeney Todd which includes the music of Danny Elfman. You have to like musicals to "get" this picture. If not then you probably shouldn't bother. It's a tale of revenge, lost love and to paraphrase Tom Wolfe: You Can't Go Home Again. Depp and Carter elevate the rating of this picture. Rickman seems a bit too subdued for my tastes. MY GRADE: B to B plus; WHEN WATCHED: 08/10/2010."
