This film is dark, grim, gritty, hopeless, haunting, and mysterious; but is elevated by some truly great performances by Jennifer Lawrence and John Hawkes.

Gritty, suspenseful, and well acted. Jennifer L. and John H. are both very good in this movie, set in rural Missouri. Won't be disappointed if you enjoy realistic suspense.

This is very close to one of the worse films I've seen in many years 1/2 star.

i watched this movie when it first came out as a rental , have had it on my wishlist ever since . the revies here are correct to some extent , but leave much to be desired and give a wrong impression of this movie . yes it is slow ... you might even consider it boring , IF you are used to fast paced , glued to the edge of your seat action .
this is a different kind of movie . it tells the story , of one girl s struggle to keep her family together . what you see is raw , honest struggle and determination . going and choosing to fight for what she thinks is right . its not easy to watch , as she sees others succumb to the pitfalls around her , yet she is determind to rise above it at all costs . she shows guts and gumption not to be pressured to let others determine her [ and her familys ] life .
yes , you have to pay attention to "see" the implied struggle and drama ... its kind of like feeling with your fingertips .... rather than with your whole hand .... yet it is a very worthy movie to watch , if you are sincere in finding the treasure it hides under it all .
yes , it is a raw movie , one that will show the seedy side of backwoods and depressed america . you might think its only a picture of what goes on away from the big city and not in your town ..... yet !!! if you would have empathy ... and open your eyes .... you will see the same kind of struggle , with another face , .... right in your own back yard ....

This movie is set in the Ozarks and the details are so realistic. Not your typical Hollywood movie. The storyline is slow -- but it is still hard to keep up with what is going on. Poverty, brutality, and drugs are just a few of the challenges the main character (portrayed by an incredible pre-Hunger Games Jennifer Lawrence) faces.

I'm expecting some thumbs down, but I gotta be honest, I found this movie VERY boring and couldn't make it past the 50 minute mark. Its just too "talky" and simply dragged on & on with not a whole lot going on or of interest. Bunch of people looking for & talking about a girl's (Lawrence's) deadbeat dad. The setting in a rural town/area is NOT something I can relate to either. Scenes of old folks singing around a fireplace...riiiiiight! Just couldn't relate or get into this movie in any sort of way. Might enjoy if your a fan of Jennifer Lawrence. Glad this one is wishlisted as of this writing because I believe in the old saying "one man's trash is another man's (or woman's) treasure".

This is a great watch, and I think what makes it so riveting is Jennifer Lawrence's performance. For me, it was like nothing else I'd seen from a young actress. The story and the atmosphere in addition make this a must-see.

This isn't my normal type of movie that I normally pick to watch but this didn't sound like it was going to be too "bloody" and sounded very interesting. It was a good watch and almost thought about keeping it but wanted to make it available to someone else to watch.
